Answering Patient's
Questions About MRI. Here
are answers to some common questions about, state-of-the-art MRI systems.
If you need further information, be sure to ask your physician or Click

What is MRI?
MRI is Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It allows us to see very clearly inside
the human body without the use of X-rays. MRI pictures, called images,
help make us the best possible diagnosis.
How Does It Work?
Magnetic resonance produces clear internal body images by using a particular
radio frequency to create momentary magnetic changes, and analyzing by
computer the signals returned by various tissues.
Is There Any Risk?
There is no risk to the
average patient who follows appropriate guidelines regarding metallic items
within the body. Before an MRI exam, please tell your physician or the
technologist if you have: A pacemaker A metal plate, pin or other metallic
implant Ever been wounded during military service An artificial heart valve
An intrauterine device (IUD) Aneurysm clips Ever been a metal worker Metallic
items within the body may cause discomfort or injury to you when placed
in the magnetic field, and may exclude you from the exam. Also be sure
to tell us if you are pregnant.
How Long Does An Exam Take?
The average MRI scan takes
5 to 15 minutes, with a
complete exam running 30 to 60 minutes. During this time, several dozen
images may be obtained.
What Can I Expect During
The Exam? MRI is very comfortable and easy for
the patient. First, the technologist will help you lie down on a cushioned
table. When you are comfortably positioned for the exam, the table will
move under the magnet. The technologist will then step to the control area,
and remain in constant contact with you. As the MRI scan proceeds, you
will hear a muffled thumping sound for several minutes at a time. Other
than the sound, scanning creates no body sensation. Just relax - or you
can even take a nap - but try to lie as still as possible. Any movement
during this time will blur the picture. When scanning is complete, the
technologist will return to assist you off the table.
Anything I Can Do For Best
Results? Any metallic substance on your person
can cause a bright or blank spot on the picture. To help your doctor make
the best diagnosis, please do not wear: Hairspray Mascara A hearing aid

it is easier to lie calmly for several minutes at a time if you avoid drinking
coffee or other caffeinated beverages before scanning.
